Another of Munch's favorite is something called Borek. It is a type of pastry with a savory filling. The fillings can be various different things like spinach, cheese, potato, red pepper, onion, parsley, etc. My personal favorite is a combo of spinach with parsley. Munch's favorite is spinach with feta cheese. We are extremely lucky to have someone in town who makes these fresh weekly and sells them at the farmers market. Whenever we have a chance to go visit the market and scoop some up - we go. Going before 10 is important - they disappear fast! The wonderful lady (and my friend!) who makes these is Meral - look for her - she will always greet you with a smile.
Borek can be kept easily in the freezer - just like the bread sticks. For both of these (when I am ready to make Munch's lunch), I defrost them in the microwave for a few seconds, then cut them into easy to eat pieces. Takes only a few seconds! I hope one day I can learn how to make these both. What is locally made and delicious in your area?
Seriously - can you come and make my lunches for me? Very inspiring - I will be trying some of your ideas on the boys. Around here some of the bakeries make the cheese sticks with a pepperoni stick in the middle - although I am trying to find someone who sells them for a better price. Love those pepernoten!
ReplyDeleteHi pauline, this is absolutely great and amazing of you to do beyond the impossible to provide a variety of food for your child. My mom is too. My sister is quite picky and it's really hard to provide any nutritional foods for her. Vegetables and fruits aren't really her thing either. As mom, i am sure you have encountered these problems, could you provide a few tips as to how to promote healthy eating for your child, what are your obstacles?

ReplyDeletemany thanks
All I can say is...YUMMY!...different kinds of fresh bread are always a favorite with my boys and myself.
ReplyDeleteThanx for the comments! @ Rachel SY Lau... Because I only have one child and she has never really been a picky eater - it is hard for me to make suggestions other than what I know works for her. She likes colors, themes, eating what she helped make, things that are fun, variety, having some control over choices, etc. I also never give up on offering her specific choices until I know she absolutely will not try it nor eat it. Her list of dislikes is very small - and these are foods I know she has tried numerous times and for some reason on another does NOT like them. Since she was a baby I have always offered her a wide variety of foods with different textures and tastes and this is perhaps the reason it is easier for her to accept new things still. From the time she was a toddler to about age 8 she had an issue with the texture of things like potato and chick peas, red kidney beans etc - that sort of grainy texture. Over the years she would at least try to eat something with those ingredients and slowly she got used to the texture and now has little problem with it. She never used to like chili - now she loves it! Sometimes it just takes time to get used to taste/texture. Just don't give up offering and you will be surprised what kids will eventually accept!
ReplyDeleteBorek looks sooo delish! Is this a Turkish Delight? Will I find it at the Turkish stand when I go?
ReplyDeleteThis one is in fact Turkish! But many different cultures have their own versions.
