Gimme Something Good to Eat!

I should have maybe posted this closer to Halloween, but I have a feeling that those treats may still be hanging around in some of our houses - they sure are in mine! Looking back on my posts I have realized that it may appear that Munch gets few treats in her lunch, but let me assure you - she does.

Being a student in a Nutrition program, I have always been concerned about treats - to give or not to give? Through my schooling I have learned that treats in moderation are ok, and have become much more relaxed about the whole issue.

With Munch, I try to add one thing each day for her treat. I should it was important to mention this because often it cannot be seen in my photo's - I tend to slip it into her lunch bag as we are running out the door. I am ok with her eating treats if she is also eating her regular lunch - which she almost always does.

One of our favorite yearly traditions is to sort, count and pile collected Halloween candy - very fun! Then we look at it all and "ooo" and "aah" at our beautiful stash. These will serve as little lunch treats for a long time to come - well at least until the Christmas treats start showing up.

  1. Treats are a good thing to give occasionally. Remember they are kids after all! I think as long as you keep most lunches nutritious there is nothing wrong with a sweet little treat that will put a big smile on their faces.

  2. Love Halloween! and look at all that candy...lucky Munch!

I love your thoughts on treats for kids, in moderation. I know a lot of parents that are on either end of the spectrum - either let their children eat whatever they want, or not allowing them any treats. Both of these ways seem to lead to unhealthy eating - children who have access to mass amounts of junk tend to eat mass amounts of junk. Children who have limited access may develop binge behaviors.

    Munch enjoy those treats!

  3. I remember doing that with my Halloween candy. But then I love to organize things, even from a young age. Nowadays I can't seem to get rid of my holiday treats. I get a ton at Christmas, more at Valentine's day and then more at Easter. Usually, it's all gone by Halloween (mostly because I've given it away). But with only 4 tricker-or-treaters this year we now hove lots left over, which should last until about Christmas, and then the whole cycle starts over again.
